Background of the Study
Effective waste management is crucial for urban sustainability, yet many rapidly urbanizing areas face significant challenges in this regard (Okon, 2023). In Uyo, the surge in urban population has led to increased waste generation, placing immense pressure on existing waste management systems (Ibekwe, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted inefficiencies in collection, recycling, and disposal practices that compromise public health and environmental quality (Eyo, 2023). The interplay of urban planning, community behavior, and governmental policies plays a critical role in shaping waste management outcomes (Adiele, 2025). This study evaluates current waste management practices among urban residents in Uyo, examining the roles of municipal authorities and community initiatives in addressing waste challenges. The research aims to identify gaps and propose sustainable strategies that can enhance environmental hygiene and resource recovery (Mfon, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The rapid urban expansion in Uyo has exacerbated waste management challenges, resulting in environmental degradation and public health risks (Anyanwu, 2023). Inefficient collection systems and inadequate recycling practices have contributed to the proliferation of unmanaged waste (Ifeoma, 2024). The limited research on urban residents’ waste disposal behaviors hinders effective policy development and intervention strategies (Okoro, 2023). This study addresses the need for a systematic evaluation of waste management practices to inform sustainable urban environmental management in Uyo.
